Noma and Human Rights
March 2012
By adopting a resolution that identifies noma as an iconic disease and establishes the link between severe malnutrition and childhood diseases, the Council of Human Rights recognized noma as a marker of extreme poverty.
This is the first official recognition at international level of this neglected disease. It will enhance the credibility of the Winds of Hope Foundation’s and International NoNoma Federation’s advocacy before the highest national and international authorities, and so better protect the human rights of malnourished children and allow more effective action against this tragic disease of noma.

Relaunch of the collaboration with WHO
October 2010
A new cooperation agreement was signed on October 1, 2010 with the Regional Office for Africa. National control programs against noma stay well focused on prevention (training, awareness, detection) but also on results and information feedback. An harmonization of the plans and their objectives between the 6 countries will be undertaken through workshops inter-country for the noma coordinators which should allow a significant improvement in their quality and better monitoring of their outcomes.
Noma Day
May 2008
Winds of Hope and the International NoNoma Federation together decided to organize the first world day devoted to noma on Thursday 22nd May 2008.
This Noma Day took place in Geneva under the high patronage of Mr Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General, and chaired by Bertrand Piccard, President of Winds of Hope. This special day aimed at eliminating this disfiguring and fatal infection was organised in association with the World Health Organisation and its African Regional Office and with the cooperation of the FDI World Dental Federation
To round off the day, a Gala Evening was organized by the Winds of Hope Foundation. Thus ended a day designed to raise awareness about this neglected disease and to raise funds for work in the field fighting noma.
